Hanover County

With a population of almost 80,000 people, Hanover County is one of the fastest growing in the state and offers a rural lifestyle with a cosmopolitan flair. Hanover is bisected by the Route 95 north/south corridor and is skirted on the southern edge by Route 295. The convenience these highways provide has played a major role in the residential and economic development of this emerging Richmond community.

Internationally renowned for its delicious tomatoes, the county hosts the Annual Hanover Tomato Festival every July, an event that draws tomato lovers from many miles, even from nearby states. And each year more than two million visitors enjoy the thrills of Paramount's Kings Dominion. The town of Ashland, population 6,000, is home to Randolph-Macon College, a private, liberal arts school that emphasizes internships and study abroad.

The Richmond area's largest county with 471 square miles, Hanover boasts a dozen public parks which feature Civil War trenches, athletic fields, walking and jogging trials, picnic shelters, ponds, horseshoe pits, basketball and volleyball courts, an amphitheater, and many special programs for youth and adults. Additionally, residents of Hanover have access to more than a half dozen libraries.

Recognized twice for quality and productivity by the U. S. Senate, Hanover County's 21 public schools serve approximately 18,000 students. Eight of those 21 schools have been selected selected as National Blue Ribbon schools by the U. S. Department of Education.
